Trip Description;
This tour will provide insight into the approach taken to network control, fault response and incident management by a number of the Victorian distribution companies. It includes lessons learnt and improvements made following on from a number of significant weather events in Victoria in the past year. This tour will take in visits to SP AusNet’s Network Operations Centre from which it controls electricity transmission, electricity distribution and gas distribution assets as well as the recently completed integrated control servicing both the CitiPower and Powercor distribution networks.

Trip Description;
This trip includes a visit to the AMI project base for United Energy Distribution (UED) and Jemena. UED, in conjunction with Jemena  is delivering its AMI solution via a PRI meter and mesh radio.
The AMI program is a world first introducing remote ½ hour interval meter data with daily reads.

Trip Description;
Cranbourne Terminal Station (CBTS) was commissioned in 2005 to reinforce the security and reliability of supply for Jemena and SP AusNet customers in the area, and to off-load the critically loaded East Rowville Terminal Station (ERTS). The geographic coverage of the area supplied  has been amongst the fastest growing regions in Australia. Installed plant at CBTS includes one 500/220 kV, 1000MVA Transformer Bank, two 220/66 kV, 150MVA Transformers and 500 kV, 220 kV and 66 kV outdoor switchgear. The control building has a Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm (VESDA) system installed for fire protection, as do all of SP AusNet’s terminal stations.

Olex (a Nexans company) has recently installed machinery to the value of AUD20 million to further enhance the already extensive product range from the Tottenham plant. The tour of the Olex Tottenham facilities will include the latest machinery in the manufacture of conductors, high volume distribution cable insulation, transmission cable insulation, and the oversheathing of large products, one the largest high voltage testing installations for long term and impulse testing of cables, and the newly established Nexans Research Centre.

Olex reserves the right to exclude applicants for this tour. Competitors will not be allowed. Phones and cameras will not be allowed.

Visit the offices of Demand Side Response and see first hand the technology used, the controls and monitoring used and other aspects of this service to manage demand peaks. Also visit 500 Collins Street,  a 30-year-old 28-level multitenanted refurbished office building that has achieved a 5 Green Star rating. It provides an important example for the large pool of existing commercial building stock which contributes heavily to the performance of the commercial building sector as a whole. Significantly, it has been monitored before and after the upgrade and indicates improved occupant productivity.
Visit the City of Melbourne Council House 2 a visionary building leading the way in ecologically sustainable design and facility management.

Vinidex supplies the gas markets with a broad portfolio of products including a wide range of diameters of Polyethylene (PE) and PVC pipe and fittings which are used to pipe gas. Visit Vinidex’s manufacturing plant, situated at Sunshine in Melbourne’s west, to see the pipe extrusion process, quality systems and pipe logistics.

This trip includes a visit to Caulfield Zone Substation that has been recently redeveloped to a 66kV/11kV station.  The redevelopment required the use of gas enclosed switchgear due to site constraints and the difficulty in securing an alternative site.
